Whether you're putting up a new slatted shed, re-roofing an old hay barn, adding a lean-to for machinery or just hanging a decent set of gates, the steel is usually the part that holds up the job. Leinster Steel is a family-run stockholder in Lusk, Co. Dublin, and a fair share of what leaves the yard goes out to farms in Fingal, Meath, Louth and Kildare. Here's a plain-English look at what goes into an agricultural building and how to get it priced without waiting days for a quote.
What steel actually goes into a farm shed
Most agricultural buildings in Ireland are some version of a portal frame β uprights and rafters carrying a light roof β with secondary steel tying it all together. In practice that breaks down as:
- Main frame: universal beams and columns for stanchions and rafters, sized by your engineer to the span and bay spacing.
- Purlins and sheeting rails: RHS box section is the common workhorse here, and it takes a screw or a weld happily.
- Bracing, cleats and gussets: equal and unequal angle plus flat bar.
- Gates, pens, barriers and feed rails: box section and round bar β the two sections most likely to come back for a second order once the shed is up.
- Door frames and openings: PFC channel gives you a clean flat face to fix to.
One thing worth saying plainly: sizing a farm building is engineering, not guesswork. Wind loading on an exposed site, the weight of a slatted tank or a crane rail, snow on a shallow pitch β these change the sections completely. Work off your engineer's drawing or your shed supplier's schedule and we'll cut exactly to it.
Grades, finishes and cutting
Everything we supply comes with mill test certificates as standard, in S275 or S355. S275 covers most general agricultural framing; S355 is stronger, which sometimes lets an engineer specify a lighter, cheaper section for the same load. If you're not sure which your drawing calls for, our S275 vs S355 guide explains the difference in a couple of minutes.
Cutting to length is free on every order and done the same day on stock sections, so you're not paying a fabricator to cut down 6m lengths in the yard. You can have your steel plain black, or sandblasted and primed β worth considering for anything going into a damp, ammonia-heavy environment like a cubicle shed, where bare steel takes a hard life. We don't stock roof sheeting, cladding or galvanised profiles; those come from your sheeting supplier, and we're happy to work alongside them.
Delivery to farms across Leinster
We deliver on our own trucks from Treen Hill, Lusk, right across Leinster β Fingal and north Co. Dublin, Meath, Louth, Kildare and beyond. Delivery is priced by drive time from the yard, so you see the cost before you commit rather than after. If the yard is handier or you've a trailer going anyway, collection is free and stock sections are usually ready the same day.
For a single beam or a few lengths of box, put the section, length and quantity into the instant price calculator and you'll have a VAT-inclusive number in seconds. For a full shed schedule, send the drawing or cut list through the bulk and project enquiry form β a photo of the engineer's sheet is grand β and we'll price the lot the same day, including any drilling, mitres or notching you need.
Common questions
What size steel do I need for a hay shed or slatted shed?
That has to come off a drawing. Span, bay spacing, roof pitch and site exposure all drive the section size, and an undersized rafter is a dangerous saving. Bring us the schedule and we'll supply to it.
Can I order just a few lengths?
Yes. There's a β¬100 ex-VAT minimum per order, so anything from a couple of lengths of box section for gates upwards is no bother.
Do you supply steel for slurry tanks or crane rails?
We supply the structural sections your engineer specifies. Anything with a specialist coating or a non-standard profile, tell us on the enquiry form and we'll say straight out whether we can source it.
How quickly can I get it?
Stock sections are cut and ready for same-day collection in Lusk. Deliveries are scheduled to suit β tell us your needed-by date on the enquiry form.
